Website Redesign Checklist: 12 Things to Nail Before You Relaunch

Redesigns are high-leverage and high-risk
Done right, a redesign converts better, ranks better, and finally makes you proud to share your URL. Done carelessly, it deletes pages Google loved and your traffic with them. Work through these twelve points.
Before design starts
- 1. Define the job: more calls? online bookings? higher-quality leads? Every layout decision flows from one primary goal.
- 2. Audit what works: which pages get traffic and produce leads today? Protect them.
- 3. Steal from your competitors’ gaps: what do the top three local rivals do better — and worse?
- 4. Inventory content: keep, rewrite, or kill every page. Thin, outdated pages drag rankings.
During the build
- 5. Mobile-first, actually: design for the phone screen first; most of your visitors live there.
- 6. Speed budget: under 3 seconds on cell data, compressed images, no plugin graveyards.
- 7. One CTA per page: call, book, or quote — visible without scrolling.
- 8. Proof everywhere: reviews, results, logos, real photos. Stock-photo sites convert like stock-photo sites.
Protecting your SEO (the step everyone botches)
- 9. 301 redirect map: every old URL points to its new home. Skipping this is how businesses lose half their organic traffic overnight.
- 10. Carry over the boring assets: title tags, meta descriptions, alt text, schema — migrate them deliberately.
Launch week
- 11. Analytics before traffic: conversion tracking live on day one, or you will never know if the redesign worked. (Our analytics setup handles this.)
- 12. Full QA: every form tested, every link clicked, on real phones — then watch Search Console for crawl errors for two weeks.
The shortcut
This is exactly the process behind every website we build — strategy through redirects through post-launch monitoring, from 1,500 dollars with hosting from 25 dollars/mo. See the results in our portfolio, live.
