The Utah Business Owner's Guide to Google Reviews

Utah runs on word of mouth — reviews are word of mouth at scale
This state does business on referrals: neighbors, wards, gyms, group chats. Google reviews are the same trust, made visible to strangers. They are also a top-three local ranking factor — which makes them the highest-leverage free marketing available to any Utah business.
How to actually get reviews
- Ask everyone, every time. The businesses with 300 reviews are not better — they ask more. Make it a step in the job, not an afterthought.
- Text a direct link. Grab your review link from your Google Business Profile and send it while the experience is fresh — same day, ideally within the hour.
- Make it personal. “It was great working on your kitchen — would you mind sharing a quick review? It genuinely helps our small business:” beats any automated blast.
- Automate the ask, not the sincerity. A CRM can fire the request after every completed job automatically — so consistency stops depending on memory.
The rules (worth knowing before you get burned)
- No buying reviews. Obvious, but worth saying — penalties hit hard and linger.
- No review gating. Screening customers and only sending happy ones to Google violates policy. Ask everyone.
- No incentives for reviews. Discounts-for-stars can get your profile suspended.
Bad reviews: the response is the marketing
Every prospect reads your worst reviews first. A calm, specific, non-defensive response — acknowledge, explain briefly, offer to make it right offline — often does more for trust than another five-star. Respond to everything within 48 hours. Never argue in public; you are writing for the hundred future readers, not the one reviewer.
Reviews feed everything else
More recent reviews lift your map pack position, your ad performance (star ratings show in ads), and your close rate on quotes. It is the cheapest compounding asset in local SEO.
