Why We Don't Do Long-Term Contracts (And Your Agency Shouldn't Either)

Who does a 12-month contract protect?

Think about the incentives. If an agency needs a year-long commitment to work with you, they are guaranteeing their revenue — not your results. The hard sell usually sounds like "marketing takes time." Some of it does. Accountability should not.

"Marketing takes time" — true and misused

SEO genuinely needs 3 to 6 months to mature. But progress shows monthly: rankings climbing, content shipping, traffic building. A contract is not required for patience — reporting is. You can see whether work is happening long before the payoff lands.

What month-to-month changes

  • We re-earn the business every 30 days. Results are the retention strategy.
  • Bad fit? You leave. No lawyer, no buyout, no held-hostage website.
  • Budgets flex with your business. Scale up for the busy season, down when cash is tight.

It is harder to run an agency this way. It is also why our client retention sits at 95 percent — people stay because it works, not because a PDF says they must.

Questions to ask any agency before signing

  • What is the commitment, and what does cancellation cost?
  • Who owns my website, domain, ad accounts, and data if we part ways? (You should — always.)
  • What exactly ships each month, and how is it reported?
  • What results have you produced for businesses like mine?

Vague answers to ownership questions are the biggest red flag in the industry. We have rebuilt too many sites for owners who discovered their old agency owned their domain.
